2008 Porsche 911 GT2: Amazing Promo Video With Walter Rohrl

When you watch tons of automotive videos every week as we do, scarcely do any of them, touch you. Most are monotonous and uninspired with one objective: show a few details, nothing more, and nothing less. What’s there to like? Every once in a while though, some carmaker surprises us, just like Porsche did today with the creation of the truly amazing 2008 911 GT2 promo film. Actually, it’s more than a promotional video; it’s a piece of art. Take a look at it and tell us what you think.

R.I.P.: Brand New Porsche 911 Destroyed In Scrapyard

We have no idea what the hell the commenter is talking about but that’s beside the point; we felt completely heartbroken after viewing this video that shows with spine-tingling details, a brand new Porsche 911 being destroyed and turned into a soulless pile of scrap metal. If any of our readers are fluent in German, we’d really like to know why...

Video: Dutch Police vs Porsche 911 GT3

Crazy video taken from a Dutch police vehicle while the officer was involved in a high speed pursuing of a Porsche 911 GT3. At some point the driver of the 911 GT3 lost control and crashed into a road barrier, however, despite the sever damages that his car suffered, he continued driving on with all kind of parts flying away from the GT3!

Video: Porsche 911 GT2 Drifting

Here’s a “smoky” video featuring the race-prepped Hankook Tires/JIC Magic Porsche 993 GT2 driven by veteran drift racer Tyler McQuarrie. The specific 911 GT2 has been enhanced among others with a JIC/Cross suspension and a modified 600-hp boxer engine. Who said that everybody hates to go to work on Mondays…

Porsche 911 Replica Based On VW Beetle

A well executed replica is a copy of a car that is practically indistinguishable from the original vehicle. Apparently that’s not the case with this replica of a mid 80’s Porsche 911 (dubbed VW Porrera...) that we discovered on Australian eBay. However, being the weirdos we are, that’s precisely why we love this particular replica; it’s so painstaking obvious that it’s based on a Volkswagen Beetle that in the end we really, really dig it! Pity its current owner didn’t throw in a Porsche boxer engine, now that would’ve made it perfect in our books. -Image gallery after the jump

Porsche 911 Turbo Gauge Desk Clock

If you’re a “petrolhead” with plenty of time in your hands then this puzzling hand-made desk clock made from a 70’s Porsche 911 Turbo speedometer and a tachometer is something you should consider adding to your collection. According to its maker “PWH”, the tachometer acts as the hour hand while the speedometer as the minute hand. Both hands only travel through 180º - the upper part of the gauges – so the entire range of 12 hours / 60 minutes is compressed into half. At the end of their travel the two hands rapidly return back to 0. Makes Einstein’s “theory of relativity” seem like a piece of cake doesn’t it… -More images after the jump

2008 Porsche 911 GT2: Officially Official Images & Text

Porsche 911 GT2And this time its officially-official meaning that we’ve got our hands on the full press release along with the high-resolution images of the 530Hp RWD 911 GT2. You can check out both after the jump but before we let you do that, we’d like to comment on Porsche’s media titled “High-Performance Sports Car with Low Fuel Consumption” (…).

In the first paragraph Porsche supports that despite being the most powerful and fastest 911 so far homologated for road use, the GT2 manages an avg. fuel consumption of just 12.5 liters/100 km (equal to 22.6 mpg imp). Umm, did we read correct; an avg consumption of 12.5 liters/100 km in a 530Hp sports car! Who and how the hell managed to accomplish this? Honestly now, he or she should seriously consider opening up a school to teach us the art of frugal driving… -Click “Read More…” for the press release and the high-re image gallery

PRESS RELEASE: High-Performance Sports Car with Low Fuel Consumption

Stuttgart. Presenting the new 911 GT2 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is proudly launching the most powerful 911 so far homologated for road use. Through its striking design with large air intakes at the front and the rear wing so characteristic of this very special model, the new 911 GT2 expresses the power and performance potential of the fastest-ever 911 right from the start even at a standstill. Available exclusively with rear-wheel drive and a manual six-speed gearbox, this high-performance athlete accelerates to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 329 km/h (204 mph) on average fuel consumption of just 12.5 litres/100 km (equal to 22.6 mpg imp) in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), thus offering a level of fuel economy regarded as quite impossible in this performance class just a few years ago.

The power unit of the new 911 GT2 is based on the six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911 Turbo, with air supply by two exhaust gas turbochargers featuring variable turbine geometry (VTG). The 3.6-litre boxer engine achieves its maximum output of 530 bhp (390 kW) at 6500 rpm, with maximum torque of 680 Newton-metres maintained consistently between 2,200 and 4,500 rpm. With its unladen weight of 1,440 kg or 3,175 lb, finally, the 911 GT2 offers a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.72 kg/6.00 lb per horsepower.

The increase in engine power by 50 bhp over the ”regular“ power unit is provided in the new 911 GT2 by two turbochargers with a larger compressor wheel and a flow-optimised turbine housing raising turbocharger pressure to an even higher level. And for the first time Porsche’s engineers have combined the turbocharged engine with an expansion-type intake manifold – a genuine revolution on turbocharged power units.

The expansion intake manifold uses the principle of oscillating air in the intake manifold during the cooler expansion phase, keeping the temperature of the fuel/air mixture lower than in the 911 Turbo. This, in turn, means a significant increase in all-round efficiency, with fuel consumption down by up to 15 per cent under full load despite the increase in engine output.

The 911 GT2 offers new achievements also in terms of emission management and control: This is the first Porsche homologated for the road to feature a rear silencer and tailpipes made of titanium as standard equipment. This expensive material reduces weight by approximately 50 per cent versus a comparable component made of stainless steel to just 9 kg.

The new 911 GT2 comes as standard with PCCB brakes featuring brake discs made of a composite carbon fibre/ceramic compound ensuring maximum stopping power maintained with an extremely high level of consistency. A further advantage is that PCCB brakes reduce the weight of the unsprung masses versus comparable grey cast-iron discs by approximately 20 kg or 44 lb.

Yet another feature fitted as standard is the electronically controlled PASM Porsche Active Suspension Management. (PASM). The GT2 comes on 19-inch light-alloy wheels running at the front on 235/35 ZR 19, at the rear on 325/30 ZR 19 sports tyres.

The new 911 GT2 will be at the dealership in November 2007. The base price of the car in Germany is Euro 159,100.-, the market price including 19 per cent value-added tax Euro 189,496.

2008 Porsche 911 GT2 Official Images Break Loose

Porsche_911_GT2-2008Following last night’s 2008 911 GT2 brochure leak, Porsche decided to let out the first official images of its fastest and most powerful road-going 911 up to date. For unknown reasons the Germans haven’t done the same with the official press release which is been kept under tight security in Zuffenhausen guarded by Klaus and a dozen or so German Sheppard’s. Of course, nobody gives a rat’s ass since the leaked brochure has more details that we bargained for, but hey, nobody’s perfect.

We remind you that power comes from an overhauled version of the 997 Turbo’s twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre flat six engine that delivers 530Hp at 6.500rpm (50Hp more than the 911 Turbo) and 505lb-ft of torque at 2,200-4,500 rpm. According to Porsche, the 2008 911 GT2 sprints from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3,5 sec and to 100mph (160 km/h) in 7,4 sec while it boasts a top speed of 204mph (328 km/h).
